Refreshing herb drinks at European festivals serve up May Wine punch as part of their tradition. Try this wonderful Party Punch Recipe.
May Wine
- 10-15 sprigs green-dried, sweet woodruff or 1/3 cup dried, packaged sweet woodruff.
- 2 tablespoons superfune sugar
- 2 750-milliliter bottles sweet white wine, perferably a German, such as a Moselle, or 1/2 gallon apple juice.
- Juice of 1 or 2 lemons
- 1/2 pint(1/2 pound) strawberries.
- 1 bottle champagne or 1 1-liter bottle seltzer.
Steep the sweet woodruff overnight with the sugar in 2 cups of white wine or apple juice, Strain. Add the rest of the wine or apple juice and lemon juice to taste. Pour over a block of ice in a punch bowl, add the strawberries and the champagne or seltzer.
To green-dry sweet woodruff, put it in an earthenware or glass jar, covered with a cloth; leave it for 2 days.
Herb and Strawberry Party Punch Recipe
Both for children and adults guests. This festive punch is ideal for serving at parties.
- 2 cups honey
- 3 tablespoons fresh rosemary
- 2 cups lemon juice
- 1 gallon water
- 1 pint (1 pound) fresh strawberries
- 2 cups lime juice
- 1 1-liter bottle carbonate mineral water or seltzer.
Heat the honey, rosemary, and 1/2 cup of lemon juice in 2 pints of water. Bring to the boiling point and remove from heat. When lukewarm, strain into a punch bowl. Puree the strawberries. stir them into the punch bowl. Add a block of ice. Pour in the remaining water, the lemon and lime juices, and the mineral water or seltzer.
Tomato-Cucumber Herb Juice
Another refreshing herb beverage that one can’t refuse. Use fresh herbs in summer and dry in winter.
- 1 large cucumber, peeled and sliced
- 3 sprigs fresh parsley leaves or 1 tablespon dried
- 12 fresh basil leaves or 1 teaspoon dried
- 1 quart tomato juice
- 1 10 1/2-ounce can beef consomme’ (undiluted)
- 2 tablespoons limon juice
- Hot pepper sauce to taste (optional)
Puree the cucumber and herbs with 1 cup of tomato juice in a blender or food processor. Stir in the remaining tomato juice, the consomme’, lemon juice, and hot sauce. Serve chilled over ice. Makes 6 7-ounce servings.
Mint Lemonade
Mint lemonade is one of my favorites for a refreshing herb drink on a hot summer day.
- juice of 1 large lemon
- Juice of 2 large juice oranges
- 1 cup apple juice
- 2/3 cup mint syrup
- Mint sprigs for garnish
Combine the juices and mint syrup; shake or stir well. Chill, pour over ice cubes in glasses, and garnish with the mint sprigs, Serves 2. Mint Syrup recipe
- 1/2 cup mint leaves
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 cup surger
Combine ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and cook until thickened (about 5 minutes). Strain, if desired. Makes about 2/3 cup.
Refreshing Herb Geranium Wine up Party Punch Recipe
This refreshing herb drink incorporates a variety of fragrant herbs.
- 12 rose geranium leaves
- 2 sprigs each sage and lemon verbena
- 1 short sprig rosemary
- 2 750-milliliter bottles sweet white wine such as sauternes
- 1 quart (2pounds) strawberries, fresh or frozen
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 bottle champagne or 1 1-liter bottle seltzer.
Bruise 4 of the rose geranium leaves and the other herbs in the bottom of a large bowl. Pour the wine over the herbs, cover, and leave to steep at room temperature for at least 3 hours. Mash the strawberries and sweeten them with honey. (If using sweetened froze berries, omit the honey)Chill for 1/2 hour, then add to the wine mixture. Chill the wine by adding a block of ice or a jug of crushed ie to the center of the bowl. Pour in the champagne or seltzer just before serving. Garnish with remaining rose geranium leaves. Makes about 20 4-ounce servings.
