How to stop negative thoughts-anxiety? We can’t completely stop our negative thoughts. What we can do is learn to take our power back and stop letting them run our lives. Learn to observe and change our negative-focused thoughts and emotions to a positive focus. Learn to stop the negative impact they hold on our life. When we are aware of our thoughts and emotional connection we can begin to change the negative patterns to positive ones.

What is Your Thinking Pattern?

One of the first steps toward changing your negative thinking is understanding how you think right now. This may include seeing yourself as a complete success or failure in every situation, engaging in “black-and-white” thinking. Do you jump to conclusions? Overgeneralize what has happened in the past before considering other possibilities in similar situations?

Our thoughts and emotions can be experienced together: how to stop negative thoughts-anxiety?

Thoughts and emotions can be experienced together for they are intricately related, but they are also very distinct.

Here is an example:

When we keep telling ourselves and anyone who will listen to the same old stories, it’s a very long-lived thought. Our attitude is formed by the old negative stories we repeat over and over again. By truly understanding what our thoughts are, we can change them to more positive aspects. Beliefs are just thoughts we keep thinking. Therefore breaking out of the old pattern of negative storytelling. We can experience ourselves and the world around us and in a whole new light.

Understanding Our Thoughts: how to stop negative thoughts-anxiety

Our thoughts are mental cognitions made up of our ideas, opinions, and beliefs about the world around us, but also about ourselves. These influences shape the point of view, the perspectives that we bring to any situation or experience. These perspectives can be for better, worse, or neutral.

While our thoughts are shaped by genetics, education, and life experiences, they are generally under our conscious control. In other words, with awareness of our thoughts and attitude, we can change them if we choose.

What Are Emotions: how to stop negative thoughts- anxiety

Joy, fear, anger, and sadness are the most recognized emotions that come to mind when we think of them. For example, emotions can be triggered by something external, such as being witness to someone suffering or listening to your favorite music. We all experience emotions, but each of us may respond to emotions in different ways.

Sometimes our emotions can become intense, and some individuals may struggle to understand what emotion they are feeling.

All across the planet, human beings have different ideas, beliefs, opinions, and different thoughts. What we all do have in common, if not identical are feelings.

Emotions are also Contagious:

Have you noticed when someone smiles at you, you can’t help but smile back? We have the tendency to pick up on each other’s emotions. We seem to have the tendency to mimic one another’s outward states. In fact, our outward states can affect our internal emotions, such as smiling can actually make you feel happy.

Emotions can also be influenced by other factors

  • Genetics to be specific. The structure of our brain and personality, which includes self-control can affect an individual’s or family’s emotional expression.

Our genetic makeup cannot be altered our brain is a different story. According to the founder of the Center for Healthy Minds, neuroscientist Richard Davidson, the structure of our brains can be re-shaped with practice.

Physical Conditions:

Physical conditions, such as illnesses and diseases can alter, or dramatically change a person’s emotional responses, both external and internal.

  • Brain tumors
  • strokes
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Alzheimer’s
  • Metabolic diseases, such as thyroid disorders, diabetes, can dramatically change our emotional response.

Cultural Beliefs and traditions:

Japanese culture doesn’t display emotions. They tend to emphasize conformity, humbleness, and emotional suppression. They feel these traits promote better relationships. When compared to Europeans and Americans, the Japanese tend to display facial expressions and gestures less. Japanese people in fact may be expressing emotions through their voices. Therefore, our emotions are not only biologically determined; but influenced by cultural environments and social situations.

What We Think Influences What We Feel: how to stop negative thoughts-anxiety

Thoughts and emotions have a huge impact on one another, therefore our emotions become triggered by our thoughts. We worry about upcoming bills or, an upcoming job interview that’s two days away. Both of these examples can cause anxiety and fear. Therefore, by observing our negative emotions caused by our negative thought patterns, we can choose to learn how to change them.

Negative thinking and emotions can come from a triggering event. They can come from past negative experiences or an overwhelming workload, for example. Negative emotions are also the result of our thoughts surrounding an event. The way we interpret what happened can alter how we experience the event and whether or not it causes stress in our future.

Take An Appraisal Of Our Negative Emotions

We can also use the situation as an appraisal of that emotion, by observing the emotion as not a realistic fear. As a result, the more we observe our thoughts and emotions; and become aware of how they influence how we feel we can choose to change them.

Can We Really Change Our Thoughts and Emotions? how to stop negative thoughts-anxiety

We tend to believe that emotions are just “part of us” and can’t be changed. Research, however, has established that emotions are malleable. How we choose to live our lives has tremendous power over the way we feel every day. Here are some examples of the changes we can make in our lives. Moving us toward the positive life we want to experience.
