I wish I could have found Meditation at a younger age. Meditation helped me go inward and let go of the childhood trauma of an alcoholic father who would beat my mother and older siblings and terrorize us three youngest girls, for I had seven siblings. The childhood trauma of finding my oldest sister, who was15 at the time, in a drug overdose state in her bed, I was 6. I was there for her when I was 8, and she had cut her wrist. At the age of 10, I was babysitting for her. I was watching her son, around eight months old at the time.

She was in the same abusive marriage as our parents, being physically beaten by a drunk husband. They came home at about 2 am, and the fighting began. I took the baby, his crib mattress, and blankets and took him out the back door. We hid in the pine trees behind the house, where I curled up with him and held him tight. I could hear my sister screaming, and there was no way for me to help her. At the age of 10, all I could do was keep the baby safe. I was in complete fear and emotional distress, for there was nothing I could do but listen to my sister get beaten and scream for help. There were no cell phones in the ’70s. There was no calling 911.

So as you see, the patterns repeat, handed down through trauma. I also lived the same repeating patterns of putting myself in abusive personal relationships throughout my adult life.

At the age of 13, is when my panic attacks started. I was waiting all night with my mother, waiting for the wrath of my drunk father to come home. It seemed that if I stayed up with my mother when he came home, his rage was much less. I genuinely believe that my mother had her self-protection mind space. I think my mother put her mind in another place and shut off her emotions completely. She almost seemed like she was not there, she did not show affection, and I had never seen her cry, and she had a lot to cry about during those years. My father’s alcoholic rages were lessoning by the time I was 16, for his drinking became less and less.

I was always there for my older brother, who was15 at the time. He was physically cutting himself to relieve his deep mental and emotional suffering throughout my teen years, along with his alcohol and drug abuse throughout adulthood. I also lived a life of repeating learned patterns of our parents’ abusive relationships where I was physically and verbally abused.
