The Nervous System Holds Our Past Trauma

Our nervous system holds all our past emotional pain and trauma in the body. We can learn to reprogram our nervous system and release trauma from the body.

Our body is always communicating with the brain. Bring your attention to your body sensation when you notice stress and tension in your body, or feel triggered in some way. We tend to believe that trauma is only held in our brains. Our thoughts and body sensations are correlated together always. Thoughts affect our body, and our body affects our thought process.

Our body states sensory information,

  • such as heart rate,
  • breathing, gut function,
  • neural activity.

Our brain states,

  • our intellect,
  • executive function,
  • logic, reasoning, and
  • conscious action and decision-making.

When our nervous system is stuck in a high state, everything looks and feels like a threat or dangerous. Over time it results in symptoms, such as chronic pain, illness, or disease showing up in the body. We suffer burnout or fatigue, depression, and anxiety.

We tend to try to treat the symptoms or condition without resolving the underlying stress stored in the body’s nervous system. Therefore, not healing anything. we are putting a bandaid on a wound.

When we hold on to past emotional trauma, it is energy and it becomes stuck in the very cells and organs of the body. Causing illness and disease.

Nervous System Regulation

Understanding how stress works in the nervous system is important. Our nervous system is designed to perceive and respond to external threats in our environment. It responds to preserve our survival. It is a vital part of our biological system for survival. The problem is when the stress response of the nervous system gets stuck in fight, flight, or freeze mode for long periods of time it creates havoc on our bodies. Causing illness and disease.

When we experience a physical, emotional or mental, or spiritual threat to our safety, our nervous system automatically reacts. It is trying to protect us, and keep us safe from harm. But when we have unprocessed emotional pain and trauma, usually from childhood, our subconscious mind activates our nervous system from past suppressed experiences. Our nervous system is ready to jump into action when a real threat is not present. Putting us in the flight or flight constantly, flooding our bloodstream with stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline. It perceives our emotions as they are triggered by an external threat when there is none.

Therefore, it is very important to understand the stress response. To learn how to work with our nervous system to resolve the stress, emotional pain, and trauma stored in the body. As a result, learning to regulate our nervous system response in the future.

Body Base Healing-Attention and Intention

We have the ability to actually experience our embodied self, instead of intellectualizing our experience of our embodied self. We tune into our bodies with attention. This is practiced through attention and attention. We have to connect through sensory experience. It is critical to use our attention to trigger long-term healing potential. Healing is activated by deliberate attention, especially to reach emotionally significant stimuli.

Attention is a focus skill of being present with your direct embodied experiences. This allows you to notice triggers or signs that activate your felt body sensations. Attention is imperative for self-directed self-reflection to take place. Attention forms awareness of your physical self.

Pay Attention to Body Sensations

Making the intention to pay attention to your body sensations helps you become more aware of your nervous system response. Doing so is not hard, but for some, it can be difficult. The reasoning is social conditioning, a survival mechanism, or a traumatic experience where the individual had dissociated from their body.

Some individuals can become triggered by simply placing their attention on the physically felt experience or body sensations. Therefore, depending on your life experiences, you may want to address your emotional pain and trauma body sensations with a trained therapist in this work.

If you go about this alone, do so carefully, and begin in a space where you feel safe.

Bring Your Awareness To Your Body

  • Simply begin by bringing your awareness into the body sensations.
  • As you feel them, begin naming these physical sensations and continue to sit with them.
  • If you suffer from chronic pain or other physical discomforts it is especially helpful to put your attention on sensations that are pleasant or neutral.
  • If you do this practice by tuning into your body sensations and feeling numb, this may mean that you have disassociated with your body during a traumatic experience. There are feelings and sensations underneath the numbness that is scary to face and feel. As a result, you have been conditioned away from feeling these body sensations.
  • Tune into these body sensations,
  • Name them, and what do they feel like?
  • Asked the questions
    • What are you trying to tell me?
    • What message does this symptom have for me?
    • When was the first time I felt this feeling sensation?
    • What happened in my life, and who was there?
    • How old were you when this feeling sensation for the first time showed up?
  • Asking these questions can give you important information on what emotional pain or trauma experiences you had in life. Information on what these stuck emotional pain needs to be healed and let go of.

Pattern Awareness

It brings awareness to our patterns. Showing us where we are right now, and what is happening with our nervous system. What our current present moment is.

Intention allows us to make intentional shifts in our nervous system by introducing specific practices or resources. It also tells us where we are going. Intention creates a framework for your experience while providing power for change.

Practices are natural

  • yoga
  • qi gong
  • meditation
  • any type of exercise
  • acupuncture
  • coaching
  • therapy

Any of these practices which you chose provides the container, in which change occurs. We have the opportunity to tune into our body to tend and attend to our nervous system. We do this by becoming aware of the feeling sensation within the body and the patterns or triggers which activate the flight or flight response.

These practices give you metrics of your progress in relation to any given practice. Such as, in yoga, you tune into your body with the poses and your attention is on your body sensations. Yoga also will help you to move stuck trauma out of the body. Qi gong and Tia Chi is a wonderful practice that works with the body’s energy system and moves the stuck energy out of the body also.

Using some type of practice that you feel comfortable with is key. Practicing attention and intention to get in touch with your body sensations. They will offer you great information on where you are now in relation to your nervous system. Therefore, giving you the powerful insight you need about your past emotional pain and trauma. As a result, moves this stuck energy out of your body, and heals you from within.
