Most people do not realize how stress is affecting their lives. Sleepless nights, racing thoughts, constant worry, fear, and the emotional pain that goes along with it. Most people also don’t realize how stress and emotional distress affect their health, physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Medical research has shown over and over again how chronic stress is related to 90% of all illnesses and diseases. From heart disease, diabetes, and even autoimmune disease and there are over 100 of them today.
Healing From Within-meditation
Meditation was my first step on my own healing journey from stress, anxiety, and panic attacks since the age of 13, as well as MS, and chronic spine pain, which I suffered for 23 years. By the time I was in my forties, I was a train wreck, physically, mentally, and emotionally.
I had no idea that chronic stress was related to my body falling apart, I was literally crippled physically by my mental and emotional pain.
The truth is that I had no idea the effect meditation was going to have on my stress, as well as the profound healing effect it had on my body. I was in a very bad place in my life and meditation came to me through an email. Living alone and wasn’t getting around so well because of chronic back and neck pain. Dragging my right leg around when I walked. I was always home alone so I decided to try it out. I figured I had nothing to lose.
I really didn’t know anything about meditation, of course, I heard of it. However, I always had a picture of a Monk in a robe sitting in a cave in my mind when it was mentioned in passing. I also thought it was only for the people who were religious, the silly, crazy things I use to believe make me laugh when I think about them now.
The Mind-Body Connection
Once I tried it I wanted to do more, and I did it two to three times a day. It felt so good when I let go of all the stress and overthinking and worrying mind, not to mention my painful body. I think I was so worn out physically mentally and emotionally that I finally just surrendered to it. I was at the point of “stick a fork in me I am done.” Therefore, I loved it and stuck with it. The more I practiced meditation the better I felt. My stress levels came down dramatically. I was sleeping better than I ever had in my life, and my MS symptoms were starting to lessen.
In the past, every time my stress levels were higher, though I don’t know how it could get much higher, for I was under high stress most of my life from childhood trauma. However, when I was experiencing more stress and anxiety when a circumstance came up, as they always do, and as a result, my MS symptoms would become much worse. The right side of my face would droop, it became numb and I looked like I had a stroke. I had a hard time speaking and my vision would become doubled. At certain times my vision would be so bad that everything looked like a watercolor painting with too much water. My right arm would be pretty much useless and when I was up out of my wheelchair, my right leg was numb and I dragged it around with a walker.
However, when my stress levels dropped from practicing meditation, my MS was getting better. When this became so apparent in my awareness I started to deep dive into the research on the mind-body connection. In 23 years, NOT ONE DOCTOR, nor my neurologist ever talk to me about stress! Or ask me about the stress in my life.
Learning about the mind-body connection, and how chronic stress is related to illness and disease it all started to make sense. It was extremely eye-opening, and I mean that literally, for my sight was back to normal and it hasn’t gone downhill since. My speech has not been affected by stress and all of my symptoms after 23 years of suffering with MS are gone!
I could spend days writing about the effects stress has on your body and the illnesses and diseases it causes, but I rather you find out for yourself by practicing meditation. Especially if you are suffering from an illness or disease, for stress is only making it worse. I am sure you already know that when you are experiencing more stress it causes your illness to flair up. Need I say more?
What Meditation Technique Would Be Best For You?
Do you know what is the ideal meditation technique for you? Have you tried meditation before?
Are you practicing in a way that is optimal for your unique personality and goals?
Do you feel there is more to meditation than what you are experiencing right now?
When most people think of meditation techniques, what comes to mind is either watching the breath or repeating a mantra. Those techniques are great, and they do work for some- but not for everyone.
Maybe they even “work ok” for you, but until you experience the richness of meditative practice, you can’t know if there isn’t a more effective technique out there for you.
The good news is that meditation is an incredibly vast and flexible practice. There is a great variety of methods developed by different contemplative traditions over more than 3,000 years. They were developed because different people have different needs and temperaments.
Some techniques…
So there is no “one size fits all” in meditation. Yet that is the way meditation is usually taught. Most teachers and courses teach you only one or two techniques…
In fact, it is safe to say that there are as many meditation techniques as there are different types of sports and diets. Now imagine the problem if everyone is only taught either basketball or running… Or if everyone were given the same type of food…
While most meditation techniques share a great number of common benefits, there is still a big difference between practicing a technique that works for you and practicing a technique that is optimal for you. Just like there is a big difference between an “ok job” and your ideal job, or an “ok apartment” and your ideal apartment.
One technique may allow you to experience the benefits of meditation much more easily than others. It may feel more natural and more enjoyable. But you won’t discover which one it is unless you experience a few of them, in a systematic way, with proper guidance and support.
This medication course is non-sectarian. All meditation techniques are equally good, but not all of them are equally good for you. Finding the right technique makes a big difference.
Why is meditation so powerful and so needed? In a nutshell: your mind is not always your friend. It often behaves like a mean boss.
Your mind is the most powerful tool you have. Your most personal tool. It’s where all your problems live. It is also where you can find solutions, inspiration, happiness, and other amazing things.
The problem is that the mind can often be unruly, noisy, distracted, and full of self-defeating thoughts and destructive emotions. Your mind tells you what it thinks is true or not; it tells you what to do, and how you should feel. It’s almost like it has its own separate agenda.
What is the result of this? Suffering, in a variety of forms. But there is help!
Meditation is like pressing the pause button and stopping all this madness. It empowers you to see clearly what’s happening and to understand yourself. With this you gain the ability to make better choices, to stop creating suffering for yourself and others, and to enjoy emotional well-being. You gradually develop mastery over the mind.
Millions of people meditate every day. Top performers in many different fields meditate. Why do they do that, and why should you?
Imagine how your life would be if you could have some of that as well…
Meditation helps you improve your self-awareness, and your ability to let go and helps you gain mastery over your mind. That is why it facilitates all these changes.
Meditation is also a powerful cornerstone habit. Meditating daily makes it easier for you to have self-discipline and start other positive habits (like exercise, diet changes, reading, etc).
